X-Men Origins: Wolverine – Movie Review

“X-Men Origins: Wolverine” was meant to bring the story of the mutants full circle by returning to the one character who (arguably) made everyone stick together, and who was, at the same time, clearly one of the most beloved mutants ever created. The prequel should have explained how Wolverine controls his berserker rage, and how he grows into the dangerous X-Man with remarkable leader skills that we see in the successful trilogy. In all fairness, when Logan / Wolverine / Hugh Jackman lets rage take over him, the picture is not pretty – but that’s not to say the film itself manages to rise above the level of familiar competence, movie critics argue.

Understandably, X-Men and Wolverine fans will love this film, simply because it brings back on the big screen not one, but several beloved characters, including the all-powerful villain, now-silent but former-heartthrob Deadpool. Those who are not so easily sucked in by the mythology will notice from the first second that, if anything, “Wolverine” is just a mild attempt on Fox’s behalf to squeeze even the last drop of juice still remaining in the franchise – while also promising countless other sequels, spinoffs and whatnot. It’s a hurried movie that bits off more than it can chew, and the only things that hold it together are Hugh Jackman’s admirable efforts and performance.

Of course, that’s not to say that “Wolverine” is bad from start to finish, but it does imply that Fox should have thought twice before rushing into making such a film if it did not feel ready for it – just like fans were saying it would a while back. Comparisons with the leaked version are to be avoided when speaking of it, as hard as it may seem, but, even so, the film still appears like an unfinished version of a production we’ll never see. It’s either because the script tried to include more stories than it was feasible, or because director Gavin Hood fell a victim to his own well-learned vocabulary of special effects, but “Wolverine” comes short of that certain something, that je ne sais quoi that could have turned it into both a blockbuster at the box-office and a quality film, critics say.

Rewind to 1845. Logan is James, a sickly boy who accidentally murders his father, a man he did not even know that well, and who, this way, finds out about the existence of a half elder brother, Victor Creed aka Sabretooth (Liev Schreiber). The two run off together and, once their super-abilities are discovered and properly mastered, enlist their services with the army and fight other people’s battles. Even from the start, it becomes obvious that Logan, unlike Victor, is not the violent type: he may flex and howl and pack the meanest punch, but, deep down inside, all he wants to do is help others. Oppositely, Victor just wants to kill, cause bloodshed and basically beat to a pulp anyone weaker than him, which means just about everyone who crosses his path.

There is, of course, a devious army officer who schemes and plots, and orchestrates things to suit his agenda. Colonel Stryker (Danny Huston) deceives Logan into believing he’ll help him – but only after making him think he had taken something very precious from him –, and offers to make him indestructible. When the Frankenstein-like Wolverine emerges from the steaming bathtub, muscles ripped and dripping in the water necessary for the adamantium to be injected and cooled, he’s a man out for revenge. And revenge he’ll get, because he has to fight not one, but at least three villains – which is precisely why fans and critics alike were disappointed by the twisted, too complicated plotline.

The action scenes are, as expected, impressive but not because there really is some novelty to them or they carry any relevance to the main character, but rather because they’re used as dust in the eyes of the viewers, critics say. Since chances of Wolverine or Sabretooth being killed are slim to none, for instance, their confrontations become redundant since they lack finality and a specific sense of purpose, failing to show the evolution of the characters. The same goes for the other action sequences, which seem either too far-fetched – since the last “X-Men” movie, Wolverine has acquired a new ability, that of jumping really high in the air and tearing helicopter blades with his adamantium claws – or downright useless, with the mutants showing off their skills in a very blatant manner, when they could easily attack in “stealth” mode and be just as efficient.

Nevertheless, as noted above, none of this is the cast’s fault, all of the actors struggling to really make this heavy, unstructured material work. Jackman, as far as he’s concerned, seems to be the only thing keeping “Wolverine” from falling into the abyss where comic book-inspired movies go to die (where “Daredevil” is also to be found), as they say. Ryan Reynolds does his bit as well as Wade Wilson, a terribly charming and annoying skilled soldier who only lacks discipline.

Liev makes for a brilliant villain, having a certain sense of delightful menace about him that initially stuns his victims into not knowing whether they should run in fear or welcome him with open arms. Swift and insinuating, as well as extremely good-looking, Taylor Kitsch as Remy LeBeau aka Gambit also puts on a great show, as do the other mutants. Should anyone think Fox killed “Wolverine,” they should at least know for a fact that it wasn’t because it hadn’t wonderful actors to work with – and an equally awesome story to match.

“X-Men Origins: Wolverine” runs 107 minutes, minus the Easter eggs at the end of the final credits. It opened in Argentina, Germany and France at the end of April, reached the US, Romania and Sweden on May 1, and will conclude its theatrical run in Japan, on August 22.

The Good

Fans of the comics should go to “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” at least to see their favorite heroes and villains again, if not for the movie itself. Backed up by a strong and determined cast, as well as by certain fun and highly entertaining moments, “Wolverine” makes for a light way of passing almost two hours, but offers no guarantee as to it being a memorable experience as well.

The Bad

“Wolverine” falls short in many respects but the one that pains fans the most, critics argue, is the fact that it promised the world and delivered, well… nothing. Its complicated plotline, obvious use of special effects to mask shortcomings in the story, and the abundance of useless trivia make it one unsuccessful effort on behalf of Fox to continue cashing in on the mutant milk cow.

The Truth

The truth about “Wolverine,” it is being said, is that it should have not been made – or, at the very least, that it should have gone into more competent hands than those of director Hood and Fox high-ups. Without being downright painful to watch, “Wolverine” offers little to redeem itself in the eyes of the fans, with Jackman’s performance being among those few things. Fans will certainly see it, but whether they’ll also like it is a different matter altogether.

If you can see all six images in both rows of the top table, you are either not infected by Conficker B/C, or you may be using a proxy server, in which case you will not be able to use this test to make an accurate determination, since Conficker will be unable to block you from viewing the AV/security sites. You can use one of the network scanners instead.

The original Conficker A does not block internet sites and thus cannot be detected using this method. But it is by far not as wide spread as Conficker.B.

Welcome to Windows 7 Release Candidate (RC) testing. We’re on our way to Windows 7, and the RC is a great opportunity for IT professionals like you to take Windows 7 and begin testing it in your real environment. You get to see what’s coming, and we get to see if our changes and fixes from the Beta testing are working correctly. We want to encourage you to install and actively test the RC code. This will help us ensure Windows 7 is the best possible release, and help you get ready for Windows 7 deployment.

Here’s what you need to know:

This is pre-release software, so please read the following to get an idea of the risks and key things you need to know before you try the RC.

* You don’t need to rush to get Windows 7 RC. The RC release will be available at least through June 2009 and we’re not limiting the number of product keys, so you have plenty of time.
* Watch the calendar. The RC will expire on June 1, 2010. Starting on March 1, 2010, your PC will begin shutting down every two hours. Windows will notify you two weeks before the bi-hourly shutdowns start. To avoid interruption, you’ll need to install a non-expired version of Windows before March 1, 2010. You’ll also need to install the programs and data that you want to use. (Learn more about installing Windows).
* Protect your PC and data. Be sure to back up your data and please don’t test Windows 7 RC on your primary home or business PC.
* Technical details/updates: Before installing the RC please read the Release Notes, and Things to Know for important information about the release.

1. Added support for ZIP archives containing Unicode file names in UTF-8 format. When creating ZIP archive, WinRAR stores names in Unicode only if they cannot be stored correctly using the current single byte character set.
2. Added decompression support for WinZip AES encrypted ZIP archives.
3. Improved Unicode support for RAR and ZIP archive names.
4. "Ask before overwrite" and "Skip existing files" update modes are now available in archiving dialog. They allow to specify WinRAR behavior when updating already existing files in archive. Unlike already available "Fresh existing files only" and "Add and update files", these new modes ignore file date and compare only file names.

Command line equivalents of these modes are:
a) switch -o enables "Ask before overwrite" archiving mode;
b) switch -o- enables "Skip existing files" archiving mode;
c) switch -o+ enables "Overwrite all" mode (default for archiving).

5. New "Add to context menu" option in "Profile parameters" dialog. If this option is on, the profile name will be displayed in Explorer context menus allowing to activate a profile from context menu.
6. New -cp switch allows to select a compression profile in command line mode. It is supported only by GUI WinRAR.exe, not by rar.exe.
7. New "Options" page of archiving dialog contains the group of settings modifying the behavior of "Delete files after archiving" option from "General" page:
a) Delete files. Delete files normally like in previous WinRAR versions.
b) Move files to Recycle Bin. Deleted files are placed to Recycle Bin.
Command line equivalent of this option is -dr switch.
c) Wipe files. Before deleting file data are overwritten by zero bytes to prevent recovery of deleted files.
Command line equivalent of this option is -dw switch.

All these options have an effect only if "Delete files after archiving" is on. You can enable any of these options in the default compression profile to change the default behavior of "Delete files after archiving".

8. WinRAR "Extraction path and options" dialog is now resizable. You can use the mouse to drag its border to the desired size and provide more space for folder tree pane. WinRAR will store new dimensions of this dialog.
9. New "Update" SFX script command and "Update mode" group of options in "Update" page of "Advanced SFX options" dialog. These command and options allow to check time and implement file time based updating;
10. SFX script "Shortcut" command and "Add shortcut..." command in "Advanced SFX options" dialog now allow to specify an icon file containing an icon associated with shortcut.
11. New "Wipe temporary files" option in "Settings/Security" dialog provides more secure, though slower, way to delete temporary WinRAR files.
12. WinRAR and RAR display the total progress bar when unpacking a multivolume RAR archive if all volumes are present in the same folder.
13. WinRAR and RAR automatically expand names of environment variables in list files. For example, a list file can contain lines like:
%windir%\*.exe
%USERPROFILE%\Desktop

This feature is available only in Windows RAR version.

14. Added support of TAR archives with non-zero "extra field" data.
15. Added support of TAR archives, which does not contain the end of archive entry consisting of 512 zero bytes.
16. Improved Unicode support when dragging files from WinRAR window.
17. Shift+Tab key combination can be used in main WinRAR window to switch the input focus between interface elements (files, comment, tree, address) in reverse order. In previous versions Shift+Tab used the same order as Tab.
18. Corrected a possible WinRAR crash when opening truncated UDF ISO files.

Resident Evil 5 Co-Op: Hard Being a Heroine

Yesterday, the gaming department of Softpedia decided to try some co operative play for Resident Evil 5, the latest game in the very popular series from Capcom. My last experience with the franchise was the excellent Resident Evil 2, which managed to scare me a little and to thrill me quite a lot with its puzzles, boss fights and quite engaging story.

Co op in Resident Evil 5 means someone taking on the role of Sheva Alomar, the side kick that helps protagonist Chris Redfield to take care of yet another zombie (technically “ganados”) outbreak, which occurs in an undisclosed location in Africa.

The problem with Sheva is that she is nothing like me. I am white, a bit overweight and speak English with an accent, while she is a woman, quite beautiful and speaks almost perfect Oxford English. And she has quite a few skills, like doing roundhouse kicks, which I cannot hope to learn. So, I decided that out of respect for a clearly superior human being, be her simulated, I would tailor my playing style to what I believe Sheva would do. I would be daring, quick, deadly with a long range rifle and quick to run away from any hard hitting zombies.

The problem is that Resident Evil 5 makes role-playing hard. First, the inventory is rather small, at only nine spaces. Consider that fact that, for the first two levels, I relied on the pistol while having a shotgun that I dared not use for fear of wasting its ammo before I really needed it. I also carried grenades, again not using them, and ammo for the pistol and the shotgun, plus some herbs.

So, when I finally found the long range sniper rifle, I was faced with some tough choices. Should I drop the pistol that is quite effective and for which I had full ammo? Should I drop the more powerful shotgun? Should I drop the healing herbs, even if they are a combination of red and green? I think I prefer the days of role playing game inventories, when I could make two halberds and three scimitars disappear in my magical pouch.

And because inventory management is done in real time, I also found that my elegant strategy of running and gunning was not too effective when I had to fiddle with swapping weapons with zombies closing my avenues of escape. I had to settle for some serious melee work at some points. And let me tell you, it was not pretty and it did not feel like something Sheva would engage in.

Even with the game design of Resident Evil 5 cramping my style, I really enjoyed the opening levels, especially the portion where we ran frantically from a huge guy with a jagged axe while our helicopter came in to save us.

Vista SP2 RTM Already Leaked and Available for Download

Microsoft was yet to announce the releasing to manufacturing of Windows Vista Service Pack 2 and Windows Server 2008 SP2 that the bits had already been leaked to torrent trackers. On April 28, the Redmond company indicated that Vista SP2 (a package that also contains Windows Server 2008 SP2) had RTM'd. But signing off the Vista SP2 bits is by no means synonymous with the public availability of the service pack. Still, while Microsoft
estimates that it could take as much as a few months for the public to get access to Vista SP2, end users can already download the gold version of the service pack provided they have a BitTorrent client and know where to look on peer-to-peer networks.

Both the 32-bit and the 64-bit flavors of Vista SP2 have been leaked. Installing the service pack will bump the Windows version up to 6002.18005, according to reports in the wild, full string being 6.0.6002.18005. Information accompanying the leaked bits reveals that 32- bit (x86) Vista SP2 RTM and Server 2008 SP2 RTM are available in English, Japanese, Spanish, German and French. For the x86 releases CRC: 3368C777, MD5: C9394FD32DB15619328AF4FF0315750A, and SHA1: 106C0484D7449CC4B70353C21D0C0D63E4BA66C3 certify that the downloads are indeed what they claim. As far as the x64 versions are concerned, users should look for CRC: 1737E14D, MD5: A3BCB1FFDB366397FA5FAB0898EB098D, and SHA1: BE8D74ADC029FA7350FC1F0D32BEF853C0519A92.
At the same time, Microsoft has not offered the Vista SP2 RTM bits in just five languages. The packages containing a full 36 languages have also been leaked. In this regard, 32-bit Vista SP2 RTM (36 languages) features: CRC32: 8D07A886, MD5: cad218b99fc301836e385049c75f5eaf, and SHA-1: 7f8aa802e157282d84cf47950281de53a8c26f22. The 64-bit version is accompanied by the following info: CRC32: 19C1676E, MD5: db35df98ae5a6fd085386580a6ee8b55, and SHA-1: f0e46deb7734b8ed277b0cf2304ee2babc4d9b1c.

Microsoft must have offered Vista SP2 RTM and Windows Server 2008 SP2 RTM to partners, which subsequently leaked the bits. At the time of this article MSDN and TechNet subscribers had not yet been offered Vista SP2 RTM. Public downloads of Windows Vista SP2 RTM and Windows Server 2008 SP2 RTM are expected in the second quarter of 2009.
